Kitesurfing Lessons

Broken down into sessions, a full course comprises of four sessions, which typically lasts for 3hr per session with multiple students and 2hrs per session when 121. The sessions are broken down into chronological order and by the end of each session you should know;

Session 1 (Basic trainer & LEI kite flying)

  • Safe wind directions and conditions for kiting.
  • Spot and hazards assessment.
  • Setup a trainer kite
  • Basic flying skills with trainer kite
  • Twist and untwist the lines while flying the kite
  • Launch and land the trainer kite with an assistant.
  • Walk and change directions while flying the trainer kite.
  • Know the wind window.
  • Setup an LEI (leading edge inflatable 4line kite) with depower system.
  • Carry and handle the kite properly.
  • Pre flight check of equipment and lines.
  • Pull quick release and activate leash (on land)
  • Understand the international communication signals for landing and launching.
  • Assist with launch of LEI kite.
  • Control the LEI kite hooked into the harness.
  • Understand the depower system.
  • Basic flying skills with the LEI kite.
  • Bonus point to reach is first downwind body drag depending on wind strength.



Session 2 (Downwind bodydrag)

  • Independent setup of LEI kite with supervision.
  • Assist with launch of LEI kite.
  • Control the LEI kite hooked into the harness.
  • Water re-launch the LEI kite.
  • Body drag downwind.
  • Maintain correct kite position in the wind window.
  • Change direction to the left and to the right while body dragging.


Session 3 (Advanced bodydrag)

  • Continuation of session 2, downwind body drag, water re-launch etc.
  • Walking upwind with kite controlling the kite with one hand.
  • Upwind body drag with LEI kite to recover board.
  • Upwind body drag with LEI kite holding the board with one hand.
  • Enter and exit the same point while upwind body dragging.
  • If time permits, can practice the ‘bob’ technique (maintain kite at 12’o’clock with one hand and feet out in front with no board)


Session 4 (Board start)

  • Theory of water start; kite, board and body position, power stroke.
  • Can put the board on the feet and maintain correct position for water start.
  • Water start in both directions.
  • Come to a controlled stop.
  • Determine the wind strength, direction and quality.
  • Right of way rules.
  • Equipment setup and choice according to the weather conditions.
  • Exit the water independently and safely while controlling the kite.
  • Launch & land the kite to an assistant.


Self rescue and pack down; this will be included during one of the sessions, generally at the end of a session or when the conditions change, e.g. lights winds.
